“Clay has opened many windows and doors for my imagination to wander and flourish, giving my reality a voice.” — Mark Rivera
From a young age, Mark showed great creativity and artistic talent. He was never one to fit into the standard mold that society expected.Art and emotion intertwined for Mark. He channeled himself through different mediums, ultimately settling on ceramics, terrazzo and mosaics; these became his “Mosaic Marks.”
He was drawn to working on public works of art that were large and impactful. He started with public art in Denver and decided to make the big move in 2000 to Davis for additional opportunities to grow as an artist. Mark Rivera holds dearly within his heart a dozen golden years in Davis, California. His work can be found in numerous public places such as Delta of Venus Restaurant, Davis Central Park, The Davis Food Coop, UC Davis, USDA Davis Headquarters and the Sacramento International Airport, as well as in a number of private collections. Rivera is inspired by spiritual matters and sacred spaces such as Native American medicine wheels, Mandalas, Buddhist sand painting, nature and environment, sacred geometry and crop circles.
On May 22, 2021, Mark Rivera passed away at the age of 49 in Davis. His soul and his spirit shined from him and was witnessed by all who met him, leaving an everlasting impact.
